dComms was initiated by eQualitie in February 2022 in response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The project aims to provide an alternative communication platform for internet users in Ukraine during periods of access restriction or censorship on the network.
dComms offers Ukrainian users decentralized internet services such as Mastodon, Matrix, Ceno Browser, and Briar, providing users with control over these services unlike the social networks of tech giants that may impose communication limitations. These services are hosted on local servers in Ukraine, reminiscent of the early 2000s when individuals began connecting to the internet via local networks.
